Hytrin
Hytrin (terazosin) is an alpha-blocker that relaxes the muscles in your blood vessels, resulting in lowered blood pressure. Hytrin is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Hytrin is available in generic form. Generic drugs usually cost less.
Important Information
You should not use Hytrin if you are allergic to terazosin, or if you have pheochromocytoma (tumor of the adrenal gland).
To make sure Hytrin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had:
- liver or kidney disease;
- a heart rhythm disorder;
- low blood pressure; or
- if you take a blood thinner (warfarin, Coumadin, Jantoven).
You may feel dizzy or lightheaded when you first start taking Hytrin. Do not drive or perform activities that require alertness until you are sure you can do so safely.
Do not stand or sit up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. Doing so may cause you to feel dizzy or faint.
Hytrin can affect your pupils during cataract surgery. Tell your eye surgeon ahead of time that you are using this medicine.
Before taking this medicine
You should not use Hytrin if you are allergic to terazosin, or:

It is not known whether this medicine will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
It is not known whether terazosin passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while using Hytrin.
How should I take Hytrin?
Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose.
Hytrin is usually taken once daily at bedtime. Follow your doctor's instructions.
Hytrin can be taken with or without food.
If you cannot swallow a capsule whole, open it and sprinkle the medicine into a spoonful of applesauce. Swallow right away without chewing. Do not save the mixture for later use.
Do not crush, chew, or open a terazosin capsule. Swallow it whole.
While using Hytrin, you may need frequent blood tests.
If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using Hytrin.
You may have very low blood pressure while taking this medicine. If you feel dizzy or lightheaded, sit up or stand slowly. Do not stand or sit up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. Doing so may cause you to feel dizzy or faint.
Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Get up slowly and steady yourself to prevent a fall.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.
What should I avoid while taking Hytrin?
Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how Hytrin will affect you. Your reactions could be impaired.
Hytrin side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
- a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
- chest pain, fast or pounding heartbeats;
- swelling in your ankles or feet, rapid weight gain; or
- shortness of breath (even with mild exertion).
Common side effects may include:
- dizziness, drowsiness;
- headache;
- tired feeling;
- nausea, upset stomach; or
- joint pain.
