Proscar
Proscar (finasteride) is a medicine specially intended for the treatment of two various problems - benign prostatic hyperplasia and androgenetic alopecia. The first one is also known as BPH - it is a noncancerous growth of the prostate gland. The second one is also referred to as male pattern baldness - it is the type of hair loss that affects only men and usually starts with the thinning of the hair on the temples and vertex of the head. Proscar can be used by men only.
Important Information
Proscar is not going to work for everyone. You will have to take it on a regular basis for as long as recommended to make sure it's efficient. Proscar is FDA pregnancy category X - meaning it's going to cause serious birth defects in unborn babies. Finasteride can be absorbed through the skin - women or children should not be allowed to handle Proscar. If a woman accidentally comes into contact with this medication from a broken or crushed tablet, wash the area with soap and water right away.
Before Taking Proscar
To make sure Proscar is going to be safe for you, inform your health care provider if you have ever had an allergic reaction to finasteride, or to a similar medicine. Taking Proscar may increase your risk of developing prostate cancer. Your health care provider will perform tests to make sure you do not have other conditions that would prevent you from safely using Proscar.
Proscar is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken Proscar tablets. Proscar can be absorbed through the skin, and women or children should not be permitted to handle Proscar tablets.
How Should I Take Proscar?
Proscar should be taken exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Proscar can be taken with or without food.
Proscar is usually taken once a day, with or without food. Try to take Proscar at the same time each day. Proscar can be crushed or cut, but make sure you do not handle the tablet if you are pregnant or could become pregnant. Proscar can be absorbed through the skin. If you come into contact with a broken or crushed tablet, wash the area with soap and water right away.
Do not skip doses or stop using Proscar. Your health care provider may decrease your dose of Proscar if you experience certain side effects. Do not change your dose or stop using Proscar without first talking to your health care provider.
While using Proscar, you may need frequent blood tests. Your prostate cancer and your PSA levels will need to be checked often. You may also need regular prostate exams.
What Happens If I Miss A Dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
What Happens If I Overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. An overdose of Proscar is not expected to be dangerous.
What Should I Avoid While Taking Proscar?
Proscar is not expected to interact with other medications. However, you should always tell your health care provider about all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
Possible Side Effects
Proscar may cause side effects. Tell your health care provider if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
- impotence, loss of interest in sex, or trouble having an orgasm;
- abnormal ejaculation;
- swelling in your hands or feet;
- swelling or tenderness in your breasts;
- dizziness, weakness;
- feeling like you might pass out;
- headache;
- runny nose; or
- skin rash.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your health care provider about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
What Other Drugs Will Affect Proscar?
Proscar may interact with other medications. However, this interaction is not expected to be harmful. Tell your health care provider about all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
