Casodex
Casodex is a medication used to treat prostate cancer. It is a nonsteroidal antiandrogen (NSAA) and works by blocking the effects of androgens (male hormones). Casodex is available in both brand-name and generic form.
Casodex is used to treat prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. It is not used to treat prostate cancer that has not spread.
Casodex may be used alone or in combination with other medication.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Casodex include:
- hot flashes
- impotence
- loss of interest in sex
- trouble having an orgasm
- breast pain or tenderness
- swelling in your hands or feet

Important Information
Casodex may increase the risk of developing a serious blood clot. Stop taking Casodex and call your doctor at once if you have symptoms of a blood clot:
- sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body;
- sudden severe headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech, or balance;
- chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling;
- swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet;
- shortness of breath;
- a change in the amount of urine produced;
- nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); or
- easy bruising, unusual bleeding (nose, mouth, vagina, or rectum), purple or red pinpoint spots under your skin.
Do not take Casodex if you are allergic to bicalutamide or if you have liver disease.
Before taking this medicine
You should not use Casodex if you are allergic to bicalutamide, or if you have:
- liver disease.
To make sure Casodex is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had:
- kidney disease;
- heart disease, congestive heart failure; or
- a blood clot.
It is not known whether this medicine will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
Bicalutamide can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while using this medicine.
How should I take Casodex?
Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Use the medicine exactly as directed.
Casodex is usually taken once per day. Follow your doctor's dosing instructions very carefully.
Casodex can be taken with or without food.
Your blood pressure will need to be checked often.
If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using bicalutamide. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time.
Casodex is only part of a complete treatment program that may also include diet, radiation therapy, or other cancer medications. Follow your doctor's instructions about any restrictions on food, beverages, or activity.
