Doxycycline is a medication used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It is a tetracycline antibiotic, meaning it works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. Doxycycline is available in both generic and brand-name forms. Generic doxycycline is covered by most Medicare and insurance plans, but some pharmacy coupons or cash prices may be lower. The brand-name version of doxycycline is usually more expensive than the generic version.
Doxycycline is used to treat bacterial infections, including pneumonia, acne, and chlamydia. It can also be used to prevent malaria. Doxycycline may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body.
Doxycycline is used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as acne, urinary tract infections, intestinal infections, eye infections, gonorrhea, chlamydia, periodontitis (gum disease), and others.
Doxycycline is also used to treat blemishes, bumps, and acne-like lesions caused by rosacea.
There are many different brands and forms of doxycycline available. Not all brands are listed on this leaflet.
Doxycycline may be used in combination with other medications to treat certain types of infections. Use all medications as directed by your doctor.
Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label.
Take this medicine with a full glass of water.
To prevent malaria: Start taking the medicine 1 or 2 days before entering an area where malaria is common. Continue taking the medicine every day during your stay and for at least 4 weeks after you leave the area.
To treat malaria: Your doctor will prescribe an initial dose of doxycycline followed by a maintenance dose. For the treatment of most types of malaria, you will need to take doxycycline for 3 to 7 days.
To prevent malaria while traveling: Start taking the medicine 1 or 2 days before travel. Take doxycycline every day during travel and for 4 weeks after you leave your destination.
If you are taking doxycycline to prevent malaria, you will probably start with a low dose and increase it as needed. If you are taking doxycycline to treat an infection, the usual adult dose is 100 mg daily.
For children: For the treatment of most types of infections, the recommended dose of doxycycline is 2.2 mg/kg (1 mg/lb) of body weight, taken once daily. This dose can be increased up to 4.4 mg/kg (2 mg/lb) per day, divided into 2 doses, if needed.
For the prevention of malaria, the recommended dose of doxycycline for children is 2.2 mg/kg (1 mg/lb) of body weight, taken once daily. This dose can be increased up to 4.4 mg/kg (2 mg/lb) per day, divided into 2 doses, if needed.
For the treatment of severe acne, the recommended dose of doxycycline for children is 2.2 mg/kg (1 mg/lb) of body weight, taken once daily. This dose can be increased up to 4.4 mg/kg (2 mg/lb) per day, divided into 2 doses, if needed.
For the prevention of malaria, the recommended dose of doxycycline for children is 5 mg/kg (2.3 mg/lb) of body weight, taken once daily. This dose can be increased up to 10 mg/kg (4.5 mg/lb) per day, divided into 2 doses, if needed.
For children weighing less than 45 kg (99 lb), the recommended dose of doxycycline is 100 mg daily.
Doxycycline can be taken with or without food.
To prevent nausea, take this medication with food or milk.
Shake the oral suspension (liquid) for at least 15 seconds just before you measure a dose. To be sure you get the correct dose, measure the liquid with a marked measuring spoon or medicine cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
The chewable tablet must be chewed before you swallow it.
Do not crush, break, or open a delayed-release capsule or tablet. Swallow the pill whole. It is specially made to release medicine slowly in the body. Breaking or opening the pill would cause too much of the drug to be released at one time.
Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Doxycycline will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu.
Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
Take this medicine at the same time each day.
Do not take antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium within 2 hours before or after you take doxycycline.
Some forms of doxycycline are used to prevent malaria, to treat anthrax, or to treat infections caused by mites, ticks, or lice.
Your dosage, drug form, and how often you take the drug will depend on:
the condition being treated
how severe or mild your condition is
other medical conditions you have
how you react to the first dose
For the best effect, take this antibiotic at evenly spaced times. To help you remember, take this medication at the same time every day.
Continue to take this medication until the full-prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection.
Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.
