Synthroid
Synthroid (levothyroxine) is a synthetic form of one of the two hormones produced by the thyroid gland, the other being triiodothyronine. These hormones are responsible for maintaining normal metabolism in the body. Synthroid is used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough of these hormones. Synthroid is also used to treat goiters (enlarged thyroid glands), which can be caused by either hypothyroidism or Graves' disease. Synthroid is available in generic form.
Levothyroxine is the active ingredient in Synthroid, and is also available as a generic drug. Generic drugs are often less expensive than the brand-name version. In some cases, they may not be available in every strength or form as the brand-name drug. Synthroid is available in the following strengths:
- Synthroid 25 mcg (0.025 mg)
- Synthroid 50 mcg (0.05 mg)
- Synthroid 75 mcg (0.075 mg)
- Synthroid 88 mcg (0.088 mg)
- Synthroid 100 mcg (0.1 mg)
- Synthroid 112 mcg (0.112 mg)
- Synthroid 125 mcg (0.125 mg)
- Synthroid 137 mcg (0.137 mg)
- Synthroid 150 mcg (0.15 mg)
- Synthroid 175 mcg (0.175 mg)
- Synthroid 200 mcg (0.2 mg)
- Synthroid 300 mcg (0.3 mg)
Synthroid may be taken with or without food. If you take Synthroid with food, you may need to take a lower dose. Follow your doctor's instructions.
To be sure this medication is not causing harmful effects, your blood will need to be tested often. Your thyroid function may also need to be checked. Do not miss any follow up visits to your doctor for blood or urine tests. Visit your doctor regularly.
If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Synthroid and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately:
- chest pain
- shortness of breath
- rapid or irregular heartbeat
- swelling of the ankles, feet, or legs
- fever, chills, or sore throat
- headache, dizziness, or lightheadedness
- seizures
Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Synthroid and talk to your doctor if you experience
- nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach cramps
- weight gain or loss
- changes in appetite
- changes in menstrual periods
- mild hair loss
- muscle aches, tenderness, or weakness
- joint pain
- anxiety, irritability, or mood changes
- skin rash or dry skin
- increased sweating
- warmth or tingling under the skin
- changes in appetite
- headache
- dizziness
- trouble sleeping
- nervousness
- shakiness
- tiredness
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
When used in small doses, there are no serious side effects associated with Synthroid. However, if you experience any of the following side effects, you should stop taking Synthroid and consult your doctor immediately:
- chest pain
