What is Cardura?
Cardura is a medication used to treat hypertension, or high blood pressure. It is also used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, a condition that causes enlargement of the prostate gland.
Cardura belongs to a class of drugs called alpha blockers. Alpha blockers work by relaxing the muscles around blood vessels, which allows blood to flow more easily and lowers blood pressure.
Cardura is available in generic form and as the brand-name drugs Cardura XL and Cardura E. Generic drugs usually cost less than the brand-name versions. In some cases, they may not be available in every strength or form as the brand-name drugs.
Why is Cardura used?
Cardura is used to treat hypertension. It is also used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia in men.
Hypertension is a condition in which the force of the blood against the walls of the arteries is too high. High blood pressure can damage the arteries, heart, and kidneys and can lead to heart disease, heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a condition that occurs when the prostate gland enlarges. This can cause urinary problems such as a weak stream, difficulty urinating, or the need to urinate more often.
Cardura may be used as part of a combination therapy. That means you may need to take it with other drugs.
How should I take Cardura?
Cardura is usually taken once a day with or without food.
To treat hypertension, the usual starting dose of Cardura is 4 mg once daily. Your doctor may increase your dose to 8 mg once daily if your blood pressure is not controlled.
To treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, the usual starting dose of Cardura is 4 mg once daily. Your doctor may increase your dose to 8 mg once daily if your symptoms are not controlled.
Cardura can be taken with or without food.
Cardura XL is an extended-release tablet that is usually taken once a day with breakfast.
Cardura E is an extended-release capsule that is usually taken once a day with breakfast.
If you take Cardura XL or Cardura E, do not crush or chew the tablet or capsule. Swallow it whole.
If you can't swallow a tablet or capsule whole, ask your doctor if you can open the capsule and sprinkle the medicine into a spoonful of pudding or applesauce to make swallowing easier. Swallow the mixture right away without chewing. Do not save it for later use.
Cardura XL and Cardura E are not interchangeable with other forms of Cardura. Be sure to take the medicine exactly as directed.
Cardura will control your hypertension, but it will not cure it. You will need to take Cardura for the rest of your life.
Cardura may control your BPH symptoms, but it will not cure your condition. You will need to take Cardura for as long as you have BPH.
Your blood pressure will need to be checked often. Your prostate gland may also need to be checked.
If you are being treated for hypertension, keep using Cardura even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. You may need to use blood pressure medication for the rest of your life.
If you are being treated for BPH, keep using Cardura even if you feel well.
Do not stop taking Cardura without talking to your doctor. Stopping suddenly may make your condition worse.
If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using Cardura.
Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.
Cardura XL and Cardura E are not interchangeable with other forms of Cardura. Be sure you receive the correct form of this medicine.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.
What should I avoid while taking Cardura?
Do not take other alpha blockers such as alfuzosin (Uroxatral), doxazosin (Cardura), prazosin (Minipress), terazosin (Hytrin), or tamsulosin (Flomax).
Cardura side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
swelling in your ankles or feet;
a big weight gain;
urinating less than usual or not at all;
chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling;
numbness or tingling and a heavy feeling in your arms or legs;
vision problems; or
a seizure (convulsions).
Common Cardura side effects may include:
dizziness, drowsiness;
feeling tired;
headache;
stuffy nose;
nausea, upset stomach; or
flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling).

What other drugs will affect Cardura?
Tell your doctor about all your other medicines, especially:
an ACE inhibitor such as benazepril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), fosinopril (Monopril), enalapril (Vasotec), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), moexipril (Univasc), perindopril (Aceon), quinapril (Accupril), ramipril (Altace), or trandolapril (Mavik);
a beta blocker such as atenolol (Tenormin, Tenoretic), carvedilol (Coreg), labetalol (Normodyne, Trandate), metoprolol (Dutoprol, Lopressor, Toprol), nadolol (Corgard), nebivolol (Bystolic), propranolol (Inderal, InnoPran), sotalol (Betapace), and others;
a calcium channel blocker such as amlodipine (Norvasc, Caduet, Exforge, Lotrel, Tekamlo, Tribenzor, Twynsta), diltiazem (Cartia, Cardizem), felodipine (Plendil), is
