Uroxatral (alfuzosin) is a medication used to treat men with an enlarged prostate. The prostate is a small gland that is located just below the bladder. The prostate produces a fluid that is released during ejaculation.
Uroxatral is an alpha blocker. This type of medication works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck. This allows urine to flow more freely.
Uroxatral is available in both brand-name and generic forms.

Important Information
You should not take Uroxatral if you are allergic to alfuzosin, or if you have:
a history of low blood pressure;
a history of fainting;
a history of liver disease; or
if you are also taking ketoconazole or itraconazole.
Some people using Uroxatral have experienced a sudden decrease in vision, sometimes with permanent loss of vision. It is not clear whether Uroxatral is the actual cause of vision loss.
Stop taking this medicine and call your doctor at once if you have:
a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
sudden vision loss;
ringing in your ears, hearing loss;
chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling;
feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion; or
swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet.
Common Uroxatral side effects may include:
dizziness, drowsiness, weakness;
headache;
nausea, upset stomach;
stuffy nose;
breast tenderness; or
decreased interest in sex.

Alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets are an alpha-adrenergic blocker indicated for the treatment of symptomatic BPH in men with an enlarged prostate [see Clinical Studies (14.1)].
Limitation of Use
Alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets are not indicated for use in women or children [see Use in Specific Populations (8.1, 8.4)].
Alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets are not indicated for use in men with severe renal impairment [see Use in Specific Populations (8.6) and Clinical Pharmacology (12.3)].
Alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets are not indicated for use in men with mild hepatic impairment [see Use in Specific Populations (8.7) and Clinical Pharmacology (12.3)].
Alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets are not indicated for use in men for whom sexual activity is inadvisable [see Use in Specific Populations (8.3)].
Warnings and Precautions
Syncope and Related Events
Syncope and related events have been reported with use of alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets and other alpha-blockers. These events have occurred most commonly in men with severe cardiovascular disease and concomitant use of cardiovascular medications and in men with a history of syncope. Alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets should be used with caution in these patients. In addition, alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets should not be used in men with symptomatic hypotension or men who have had a hypotensive response to other medications.
Syncope has been reported in 0.2% of patients taking alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets 10 mg in clinical trials. In these patients, the syncope occurred within 1 hour of dosing.
Alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets, like other alpha-blockers, may cause a drop in blood pressure when you stand up from a sitting or lying position. This may cause you to feel dizzy or faint. To avoid this problem, get out of bed slowly, resting your feet on the floor for a few minutes before standing up.
If you experience a sudden drop in blood pressure, you may feel dizzy, faint, or have a heart attack or stroke.
Alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets should not be used by men who are taking nitrates (such as nitroglycerin) or who have recently taken a nitrate medication.
If you have any of these conditions, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets.
Fainting has been reported in 0.4% of patients taking alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets in clinical trials. The fainting occurred within 1 hour of dosing.
Alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets should be used with caution in men with a history of fainting. In addition, alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets should not be used in men who have had a fainting episode in the past.
Alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets should be used with caution in men with severe cardiovascular disease. In addition, alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets should not be used in men who have had a heart attack or stroke in the past.
Alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets should be used with caution in men with a history of liver disease. In addition, alfuzosin hydrochloride extended-release tablets should not be used in men who have had liver disease in the past.
