Doxazosin is a medication used to treat high blood pressure and urinary problems. It is in a class of drugs called alpha-blockers. Alpha-blockers work by relaxing blood vessels and muscles. This lowers blood pressure and makes it easier to urinate.
Doxazosin is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Doxazosin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Important Information
You should not use doxazosin if you are allergic to it, or if you have:
a history of allergic reaction to another alpha-blocker medication;
a history of low blood pressure; or
a history of fainting.
To make sure doxazosin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
liver disease;
kidney disease;
heart disease or congestive heart failure; or
a history of heart attack or stroke.
It is not known whether this medicine will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
Doxazosin can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are using this medicine.
Doxazosin is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.
How should I take Doxazosin?
Take doxazosin exactly as it was prescribed for you. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
Doxazosin is usually taken once a day, with or without food.
Your blood pressure will need to be checked often.
If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are taking doxazosin.
You may have very low blood pressure while taking this medicine. Call your doctor if you are sick with vomiting or diarrhea, or if you are sweating more than usual.
If you are being treated for high blood pressure, keep using this medication even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. You may need to use blood pressure medication for the rest of your life.
Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.
