Amoxil
Amoxil (amoxicillin) is a penicillin antibiotic that fights bacteria. Amoxil is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria, such as ear infections, bladder infections, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and E. coli or salmonella infection. Amoxil may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Before taking this medicine
You should not use Amoxil if you are allergic to amoxicillin or to any other penicillin antibiotic, such as ampicillin (Omnipen, Principen), dicloxacillin (Dycill, Dynapen), oxacillin (Bactocill), penicillin (Beepen-VK, Ledercillin VK, Pen-V, Pen-Vee K, Pfizerpen, V-Cillin K, Veetids), and others.To make sure Amoxil is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had:
- kidney disease;
- asthma, hay fever, or other allergies;
- mononucleosis (also called "mono");
- disease of the heart, blood, or lymph system; or
- a history of diarrhea caused by taking antibiotics.
How should I take Amoxil?
Take Amoxil exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose.
Use Amoxil for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics.
Amoxil is usually given as an injection at your doctor's office, hospital, or clinic. If you will be using Amoxil at home, a health care provider will teach you how to use it. Be sure you understand how to use Amoxil. Follow the directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides.
You may need to shake Amoxil oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. Follow these directions carefully. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you do not understand these instructions.
Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
The Amoxil chewable tablet may contain phenylalanine. Talk to your doctor before using this form of amoxicillin if you have phenylketonuria (PKU).
Amoxil can make birth control pills less effective. Ask your doctor about using a non-hormone method of birth control to prevent pregnancy. Amoxil can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
If I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. An Amoxil overdose can cause damage to your kidneys. The maximum daily dose of amoxicillin for an adult is 3 grams.
What should I avoid while taking Amoxil?
Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, call your doctor. Do not use anti-diarrhea medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
Amoxil side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
- severe stomach pain, diarrhea that is watery or bloody;
- fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms; or
- new or worsening cough with fever, trouble breathing.
Common Amoxil side effects may include:
- nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
- rash; or
- swollen, black, or "hairy" tongue.

What other drugs will affect Amoxil?
Other drugs may affect Amoxil, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell each of your health care providers about all medicines you use now and any medicine you start or stop using.
